NEW LOCATION for Household Chemical and Electronics Collection

Take advantage of the Department of Solid Waste & Environmental Program Management’s upcoming Household Chemical and Electronics Collection Day on April 25, 2009 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the new collection location in the vacant parking lot on the south side of Bird Street (Exit I-275N at Bird Street). This larger, more convenient location was chosen in an effort to streamline the drop off process and decrease customer wait time.

This event provides residents with the opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted chemicals and electronics at no charge. At our last chemical and electronics collection (October 2008), 44 tons of hazardous waste were collected and disposed of in an environmentally-responsible manner, and over 34 tons of electronics were recycled!

The following materials will be accepted at the collection site: paints and solvents; used motor oil; automotive products; pool chemicals; mercury-containing devices, such as fluorescent light bulbs and thermometers; lawn, garden and household chemicals; and electronics including computer monitors, printers, CPUs, keyboards and televisions.  The City will not accept any explosive, radioactive or biomedical wastes at the collection site and only residential waste will be accepted.

Call (813) 348-1111 for more information, or visit www.tampagov.net/solidwaste.

Starbucks to close in Ybor!

From a HYNCA Member:

According to the Starbucks staff, there is a snow balls chance in heck of changing corporate’s mind on this, but I think our situation is quite unique compared to other closings in Tampa Bay.

1)       With IKEA opening May 6th, it is predicted that thousands of people per day will visit IKEA and that clientele is very likely to also be Starbucks drinkers.  I would argue with a little marketing, Starbucks should have no problem scooping up the throngs of people coming and going from that site.  It would seem a bit premature to close a store that is the closest Starbucks to a retail mega-icon like IKEA.

2)       The predominant critique that I hear about that Starbucks in particular is that their morning coffee rush, compared to other locations, is slim.  Most people point out that there is no where to park for the 5-10-15 minutes it takes to get a coffee and go.  I, for one, usually roll my eyes when people gripe about parking (as if walking a block or two is going to kill them).  That said, the morning coffee ‘get-and-go’ is noticeably different from the evening slow-coffee unwind.  I know that at one time, Jack Shiver’s lot was used more for patron parking and I know that U.S. Customs probably has a lot to say about the security of the parking area, but is there a way to get Starbucks a couple 15 minute parking spots for the get-and-go morning rush?

Supposedly, the number to call to support our Starbucks is 1-800-23-LATTE (1-800-235-2883).  If anyone has any ins with the Starbucks people, please write our President Tony LaColla with more information.  alacolla@hynca.com
